READY TO CRUSH Q4?
If you’re a self-publisher on Amazon KDP, you already know that Q4—October through December—is the golden window of opportunity to maximize your sales.
This is the busiest shopping season of the year, and it’s the perfect time to leverage holiday traffic to boost your royalties.
For many self-publishers, Q4 can account for a significant portion of their annual earnings, and if you’re ready to crush it this year, I’ve got the exact strategies you need to succeed.
To give you some context, I’ve been through six Q4 seasons on Amazon KDP, and every year, my earnings have grown.
Back in 2020….

…. I made just under $11,000 during Q4.
Last year, in 2023…

….my royalties reached nearly $28,000, with a whopping $17,000 in December alone. And I’m here to share what I’ve learned so you can apply these proven tactics to your own publishing efforts.
Here are 7 strategies that will help you maximize your Q4 success and set yourself up for long-term growth.
1. Publish Early & Often
One of the biggest mistakes self-publishers make is waiting too long to publish their books for the holiday season.
If you publish a Christmas-themed book in December, you’re missing out on valuable time for it to gain visibility, accumulate reviews, and climb the rankings.
Timing is everything. I recommend publishing your Q4-focused books as early as September. This gives your books the chance to gather momentum before the big holiday rush.
Keep in mind that as more self-publishers flood the platform during this time, the review process can slow down—sometimes taking up to 10 days for your book to go live. That’s why I personally set a hard deadline of December 12th for new books.
If our books go live around the 22nd/23rd of December, they may not be delivered in time for Christmas.
Tips to keep in mind:
- Focus on holiday-friendly niches like planners, journals, and giftable items that people are likely to buy for others.
- Make sure your books are published early enough to capture those crucial pre-Christmas sales.
2. Consider Taking Time Off Work
If you’re juggling a full-time job along with your KDP business, you know how hard it can be to find the time to create, publish, and market your books during Q4.
One strategy that has helped me immensely is taking some time off work in October or November to dedicate myself fully to KDP.
By taking annual leave, you can focus your efforts on:
- Publishing more books in the run-up to Q4.
- Creating marketing campaigns (both paid and organic).
- Staying organized so that you’re ready to capitalize on the holiday rush when it hits.
Trust me, when sales start skyrocketing in December, you won’t want to feel like you didn’t do enough to prepare.
3. Stay Organized & Avoid Shiny Object Syndrome
Q4 is a hectic time, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed or distracted by new trends, niches, or ideas.
The key to staying productive during the holiday season is organization and focus.
I use a niche research spreadsheet to keep track of all my book ideas, which helps me stay on top of deadlines and prioritize which projects to complete first.
You can get this spreadsheet for FREE by

Here’s how I stay organized:
- I color-code my spreadsheet to track which tasks I am working on, are finished, and that I have finished uploading. This way, I can easily see what still needs to be done and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- I recommend focusing on one book at a time. Trying to juggle multiple projects at once can lead to burnout and slow down your progress.
Once you have this spreadsheet, you will need to click on “File” then “make a copy”. You can then edit the copy as you wish.
This spreadsheet has helped me stay organized for years. Not only for Q4, but all year round. You can duplicate the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. You may wish to have a tab for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4.

4. Increase Your Ad Spend Strategically
One of the most effective ways to boost visibility for your books during Q4 is by running Amazon Ads.
With more shoppers than ever browsing Amazon, ads can help you stand out from the competition. However, it’s important to increase your ad spend strategically during this time to avoid wasting your budget.

Here’s how I approach it:
- As traffic surges during Q4, I increase my ad budget to ensure my books rank higher for relevant search terms. The goal is to rise in the rankings and capture as many organic sales as possible.
- Monitor your campaigns daily to make sure your ad spend isn’t wasted on keywords that aren’t converting. Pause or adjust bids on underperforming campaigns.
- Crucial tip: Around December 22nd or 23rd, pause or lower your bids. At this point, last-minute shoppers might still click on your ads, but if your delivery date doesn’t match up, you’ll lose the sale and end up paying for unproductive clicks.
5. Maximize Organic Reach with Social Media
Paid ads are great, but if you’re on a tight budget or want to maximize your exposure even further, organic marketing on social media can be a powerful tool.
Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are excellent for showcasing your books in a creative and engaging way.
Here’s how to leverage social media to boost your Q4 sales:
- Create short, attention-grabbing videos that highlight why your book makes the perfect gift. For example, if you’ve published a planner for busy professionals, create a reel that demonstrates how it can simplify their daily tasks.
- Consistency is key—post regularly and engage with your audience to build anticipation for your books.
If you can combine social media marketing with your Amazon Ads, your visibility will skyrocket!
6. Learn from Previous Q4 Performance
Q4 isn’t just about publishing new books—it’s also a time to reflect on what worked in previous years.
Go back through your KDP Reports and analyze your past Q4 sales data. This will help you identify which books performed well and can guide your strategy for this year.
What to do:
- Resurrect older books that sold well during previous Q4 seasons. Consider running ads to them again or promoting them via social media. These books already have reviews and rankings that you can leverage.
- If a particular niche or theme performed well last year, create similar products. For example, if a travel journal was a hit, why not try a travel-themed planner or sketchbook?
Analyzing your past performance gives you a leg up, helping you focus on what’s most likely to succeed this time around.
7. Outsource to Maximize Productivity
Q4 is an extremely busy time, and if you’re handling everything on your own, you’ll find yourself stretched thin.
This is where outsourcing comes into play. By hiring freelancers to handle tasks like cover design, book interiors, or A+ content creation, you can free up valuable time to focus on publishing more books.
This can be extremely beneficial if you have work a full-time job.
Here’s how outsourcing can help:
- Use platforms like Fiverr or Upwork to find reliable freelancers who can take care of time-consuming tasks.
- Outsourcing allows you to focus on what really matters—publishing and marketing. The more books you can get live and promote, the better positioned you’ll be for a successful Q4.
